BUS-311: Understanding Management is a fully online, three-credit course developed through a collaborative partnership with the course instructor. Rather than designing all of the instructional content, my role was to create a consistent Canvas framework that provided the instructor with an organized foundation for building the course.
This project illustrates one of the most common roles of an instructional designer—developing a course structure that supports faculty while preserving their expertise and teaching style.
The course framework was designed to:
Create a consistent learning experience for students.
Simplify course navigation.
Establish reusable page templates.
Allow faculty to focus on developing instructional content.
Support long-term course maintenance and future updates.
Every instructor brings unique expertise and a different approach to teaching. Rather than designing the course for the instructor, my role was to create a flexible Canvas framework that supported their teaching style while providing students with a consistent learning experience.
After establishing the course structure, page layouts, and navigation, the instructor developed the instructional content within the framework. This collaborative approach allowed instructional design best practices and faculty expertise to work together throughout the course.
The Canvas framework provides consistency without limiting flexibility. Using the required LC State homepage template as a starting point, I developed a standardized module layout and navigation structure that creates a familiar experience for students while allowing the instructor to build content that reflects their expertise and teaching style.
Each module follows a consistent organizational structure that guides students through the week's learning in a logical sequence. Related resources are grouped together, assessments are clearly identified, and optional enrichment materials are separated from required coursework to create an intuitive learning experience.
The homepage utilizes the required LC State Canvas template while allowing instructors to personalize the course with a welcome message, course-specific imagery, and current announcements. This approach provides students with a familiar, consistent entry point across courses while giving faculty the flexibility to establish their own presence and course identity.
